The Verdict
Posh Malt captures the essence of Pure Malt, offering a simplified, more linear interpretation. It’s not a 1:1 clone, but it gets close enough . The synthetic edges are noticeable, particularly in the whiskey and peat notes. If you enjoy the general DNA of Pure Malt and don't want to spend the premium, Posh Malt is a decent alternative. Just be aware that you're sacrificing some complexity and refinement.
How it Smells
Posh Malt opens with a blast of candied orange and a hint of bergamot. The fruit notes are definitely present, though leaning towards a generalized sweetness rather than specific identifiable fruits. Compared to Pure Malt, it's about 85% accurate in the opening – the original has a more nuanced, natural fruit accord. The heart delivers the promised malt and whiskey notes, but with a slightly harsher, more synthetic edge. The patchouli is dialed back significantly, which is a departure from the original's boozy, earthy profile. Drydown presents a peaty vanilla accord, supported by amber. The peat note lacks the smoky complexity of Pure Malt. The vanilla, while present, is sweeter and more vanillin-forward.
How Long Does it Last?
Longevity is moderate. I get about 5-6 hours on skin, with projection being arm's length for the first 2 hours. After that, it settles into a skin scent. Pure Malt boasts superior performance in both areas.
