First Impressions & Dry Down
Paradox opens with a spicy greeting – black pepper foremost, joined by a tart bergamot that quickly cedes ground. It's a more direct and pointed opening than its inspiration, lacking some of the original’s nuanced citrus sparkle. The heart is where Paradox attempts to truly capture the essence of opulence. The cognac note is present, yet registers more as a generic brown liquor aroma. Tobacco lingers as an undercurrent, more pipe tobacco than the fragrant cigar leaves of Enigma. The drydown arrives swiftly, anchored by a creamy vanilla and benzoin accord that lends a sweet warmth. There's a plasticky edge, however, a reminder that this isn't quite the real McCoy. The patchouli attempts earthiness but smells like a cleaning product.
How Long Does it Last?
Paradox boasts a respectable 6-7 hours of longevity on my skin, though it becomes a skin scent by the fourth hour. The initial projection extends to about an arm's length, making it noticeable without being overpowering. I tested this during a rainy, cool evening – its warmth was appreciated, but its synthetic sweetness became somewhat cloying after a few hours in a confined space.
The Verdict
If Paradox were a character, it would be a well-meaning but slightly inept con artist. They’ve studied the mannerisms of the wealthy and powerful, but the underlying execution is just a bit off, revealing the charade. A valiant effort, but ultimately, a flawed impersonation.
