How it Smells
River Fougere opens with a surprisingly potent wave of star anise, more medicinal than aromatic. The rosemary is present but subdued, like dried sprigs crushed underfoot rather than freshly picked. Bergamot struggles to cut through the initial herbal onslaught, offering only a fleeting citrusy whisper. The heart attempts to soften the edges with lavender, but it's a rather sharp, almost mentholated lavender. Geranium adds a metallic tang, and the cloves introduce a fleeting warmth, reminiscent of an old spice cabinet. The drydown unveils the patchouli, lending an earthy depth, though it's somewhat overshadowed by a musty oakmoss accord and a plasticky guaiac wood that flattens the composition. Compared to its inspiration, it lacks the smooth, refined character, possessing a noticeably synthetic acetone edge.
Projection Power
Longevity is moderate, clocking in at around 6 hours on skin. Projection is strong for the first hour, easily filling a room, before settling closer to the skin at about arm's length. I tested it during a workday, and found the initial strength a bit overwhelming in a confined office setting.
Is it Worth It?
If River Fougere were a character in a movie, it would be a gruff, world-weary detective in a film noir, perpetually shrouded in cigarette smoke and questionable choices.
