The Verdict
Montaigne Vanille offers a very accessible entry point into the world of single-molecule fragrances. While not an exact replica, it captures the essence of Molecule 01 with only slight deviations. However, for those seeking the full complexity and performance of the original, the investment in Escentric Molecules 01 is ultimately justified. Buy this for an inexpensive daily wear, not as a replacement.
First Impressions & Dry Down
Montaigne Vanille, by Maison Alhambra, presents a streamlined composition, primarily built around Iso E Super. The opening is immediately recognizable as inspired by Molecule 01; a cedar-like, abstract woodiness is apparent. The "velvet notes" listed are a slight deviation. This adds a barely perceptible creaminess, a subtle rounding compared to the stark dryness of the original. The cedar facet becomes slightly more pronounced in the dry down, lending a sharper, almost pencil-shaving quality. Overall, this is approximately 89% similar to Escentric Molecules 01. The key difference is the missing ambroxan that gives Molecule 01 its unique lift and longevity.
Projection Power
Projection is moderate for the first hour, sitting close to the skin thereafter. Longevity is respectable, clocking in around 6-7 hours. The initial burst is noticeable, but it quickly settles into a quiet skin scent. Reapplication is definitely needed to maintain presence throughout the day. Molecule 01 boasts far superior longevity and a unique airy diffusion.
