First Impressions & Dry Down
Oud Bois throws a curveball right off the bat. Instead of the refined rosewood of Oud Wood, there’s a blast of something sharper, like cedar shavings mixed with a medicinal cardamom. The Chinese pepper attempts to add intrigue, but it's more sneeze-inducing than spicy. As it settles, the synthetic oud asserts itself; less like aged wood, more like a hamster cage needing a cleaning. There's a creamy sandalwood trying to peek through, but it's fighting a losing battle against the medicinal quality. The drydown smooths out, becoming a vaguely sweet amber with hints of tonka. The vanilla is subdued, thank goodness, but there is a lingering plastic undertone that detracts from the overall experience. It shares a recognizable DNA with its inspiration, but it deviates noticeably.
Projection Power
I got about six hours of noticeable wear from Oud Bois, which is respectable. Projection is moderate for the first two hours, extending about an arm's length. After that, it becomes a skin scent. I wore it to a casual Friday at the office, and it felt a little too try-hard for that environment. It's probably best suited for cooler weather, like an evening out or a date.
Is it Worth It?
If Oud Bois were a character in a movie, it would be the ambitious understudy who tries too hard to emulate the star, but ultimately reveals their lack of depth.
