Scent Breakdown
Divin Aoud opens with a bracingly tart citrus accord – the bergamot and lime presenting as almost aggressively sour candies. A subtle lemon zest attempts to soften the initial assault, but struggles to maintain composure against the intensified acidity. The heart introduces a candied rose, tinged with a lactonic fig note reminiscent of overripe fruit. The ylang-ylang is nearly imperceptible, buried beneath the insistent sweetness. The drydown is where the claimed oud asserts itself, yet it lacks the complex depth of aged wood, instead presenting a harsh, almost medicinal quality similar to band-aids. The synthetic ambergris exhibits a noticeable saltiness, but clashes discordantly with the saffron, which displays a bitter, metallic tang, especially on clothing. Where the original aims for balance, this veers towards cacophony.
Projection Power
Longevity proves impressive, clocking in at around 8-10 hours. Projection is considerable, extending beyond two arm lengths for the first 3 hours before gradually receding. I tested this in an office environment, where the initial projection was perceived as intrusive by some colleagues, and outdoors in cooler weather, where it performed better but still lacked nuance.
To Buy or Not to Buy?
Wearing Divin Aoud versus the inspiration yields a stark contrast. While it attempts to capture the opulent richness of the original, it falls short, primarily due to the use of cheaper, more synthetic ingredients. What's gained is a powerful opening statement, but what's lost is the carefully constructed harmony and luxurious depth, replaced by a somewhat abrasive and ultimately less compelling experience.
